Zoos and Circus

If you like looking at animals and petting a few, Hungary has many zoos to offer. There are many wildlife parks all over the country that you can visit with your friends and family where you can find various animals and enjoy different shows featuring them.

You will also find a circus in the heart of Budapest, where many attractions await those who are curious.

Budapest

Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden

Budapest Zoo, located in City Park at the centre of the capital, is Hungary’s oldest wildlife park. Inside the zoo, you can check out more than a 1000 different species, including such exotic ones as the Komodo dragon or the wombat.

With an official city card (Budapest card) or Hungary card you can get a 25% discount on the tickets.

Here you can also hop on the remaining rides of the now closed Budapest Amusement Park.

Margaret Island Mini Zoo

Situated in the middle of Margaret Island, the mini zoo is a small park you can enter for free and look at various animals living together, including house rabbits, peacocks, ducks, storks and more. Most animals there were injured and in need of human care, so they were brought to the mini zoo to recover.

They also have small ponies, so children can ride around on them with a guide.

Capital Circus of Budapest

The circus is situated inside City Park next to Budapest Zoo. It is home to a variety of attractions including animal, clown and artistic numbers. The circus is open all year round, so be sure to check it out at least once while you are here.

Kittenberger Kálmán Zoo & Botanical Garden

Not far away from Lake Balaton, Veszprém Zoo is open to visitors every day of the year, including weekends and holidays. Apart from looking at the various animals, you can enjoy a variety of different activities there, such as, petting areas, feeding times and other events.

Miskolc Zoo

The zoo is inside a big oak forest next to Bükk National Park, where you can see around 700 animals. Amongst them, there are ones typical to the forest, some exotic species and once domestic animals that are rarities now. The zoo is participating in international breeding programmes, giving a chance to animals to survive.

A pathway was also created to show off the natural state of the environment where the zoo is located.

Nyíregyháza (Sóstó) Zoo

The zoo is located near the city of Nyíregyháza, inside a vast oak forest. The place is divided into ‘continents’, where you can see animals based on their natural habitat.

Inside the park you can do a number of different activities, like riding a camel, watching a feeding show, hopping on an electric bus ride or playing around in the monkey forest.

Pécs Zoo

Pécs Zoo is one of Hungary’s smallest wildlife park, however, it has a vast number, almost 200, different species inside.  They regularly have feeding shows, or you can ask for a group visitation where a guide will show you around and give you ‘insider’ information on the zoo and its animals.

Bear Park

The park was made especially for bears, keeping in mind to create an area as close to their natural spaces as possible. Apart from the bears, living inside the caves and fields, you can find wolves, reindeer and racoons.
